Dr. Foley graduated from Harvard University in 1993. Between college and medical school, he worked in an ophthalmology research laboratory at Children’s Hospital of Boston. The topic of his research was new blood vessel growth in the eye, which is a common disorder seen in age-related macular degeneration, diabetes, and several other ocular circulatory conditions.  He was part of a team of clinicians and scientists who first demonstrated a clinical response to blocking the molecule vascular endothelial growth factor (VEGF) in a mouse model of retinopathy of prematurity through intraocular injection of a VEGF blocking medication.  This un-named compound from Genentech ultimately became the medication Avastin, still commonly used today for the treatment of many vascular related eye diseases.

He received his Medical Doctorate at Columbia University College of Physicians and Surgeons in 1999.  After a year of medical internship at Beth Israel Medical Center in New York City, NY, he completed his ophthalmology residency at Boston University in 2003. During this time, he co-authored a textbook titled Ophthalmic Office Procedures with his residency class.  He stayed on at Boston University and performed a fellowship in Vitreoretinal Diseases and Surgery, which he completed in 2005. Simultaneously with his retinal fellowship, he was an Instructor in Ophthalmology at the Boston VA Medical Center and still cherishes working with the Veteran population.

In 2005, Dr. Foley moved to New Hampshire and has been caring for patients in our state since.  He is a board-certified ophthalmologist and a specialist in the medical and surgical treatment of retinal disorders, with an emphasis on the medical and surgical treatment of diabetic eye disease, macular pucker, macular hole, macular degeneration, and retinal detachment. He is currently both a member and the treasurer of the NH Society of Eye Physicians and Surgeons.  He is a fellow of the American Academy of Ophthalmology and a member of the NH Medical Society.

In his free time, Dr. Foley can be found biking the roads and trails of New Hampshire, playing golf, enjoying the sports of the season, improving on his woodworking skills, and managing his honey do list.
