Sarah C. Xu, MD

Dr. Sarah Xu is a board-certified, fellowship-trained ophthalmologist with expertise in the treatment of cataract, glaucoma, and anterior segment diseases. She specializes in routine and complex cataract surgery, as well as in the medical, laser and surgical treatment of glaucoma. Dr. Xu provides the latest cutting-edge technologies including laser treatments, intraocular medication implants, and minimally invasive glaucoma surgery (MIGS) to reduce eye pressure and preserve vision. She offers advanced intraocular lens implantation, including astigmatism and presbyopia-correcting intraocular lenses, to help patients reduce their dependence on eyeglasses after cataract surgery.

Dr. Xu, originally from Toronto, Canada, completed her medical school at Yale University School of Medicine. She earned numerous awards including the Miriam Dasey Award for strength of character, personal integrity, academic achievement and fulfilling the ideal of the compassionate physician.

Dr. Xu completed a 4-year ophthalmology residency at Mayo Clinic and a glaucoma fellowship at Duke University. She has published several articles and book chapters related to ocular conditions such as pseudoexfoliation glaucoma, optic neuritis and advances in glaucoma surgical techniques. She has given national presentations on topics such as “long-term outcomes of laser trabeculoplasty prior to cataract surgery” and “pharmacogenomics association with steroid-induced intraocular pressure response.” Dr. Xu has been recognized as a 2024 Castle Connolly Top Doctor.

Dr. Xu is a member of the American Academy of Ophthalmology, American Glaucoma Society, and American Board of Ophthalmology. She has an interest in patient education and tailoring treatment options based on patients’ goals of care. A strong believer in the early detection and prevention of eye diseases, she has given eye injury prevention talks and performed eye screening at community events. In her spare time, she enjoys fishing, hiking and cross-country skiing.
