Dr. Shaker is a general ophthalmologist with a special interest in cataract and glaucoma surgery. He is an experienced cataract surgeon who performs not only conventional cataract surgery but also Laser Assisted Cataract Surgery using the LenSx laser. Dr. Shaker also performs refractive cataract surgery with toric implants (astigmatism correcting implants) and multifocal implants for the treatment of presbyopia (to allow patients to see both at distance and near). For the treatment of glaucoma, Dr. Shaker performs Selective Laser Trabeculoplasty (SLT), Laser Peripheral Iridotomy (LPI) and Trabeculectomy.
Dr. Shaker received his Bachelor’s degree at Amherst College, in Amherst, Massachusetts. He attended medical school at the University of Rochester School of Medicine in Rochester, NY where he was awarded the Doran J. Stevens Prize for excellence in patient care and graduated with Honors and Distinction in research. Dr. Shaker completed his Ophthalmology residency at the University of Chicago where he was selected to be the Chief Resident. In February 2014, he received a Master’s Degree in Health Care Delivery Science from Dartmouth College in Hanover, NH, a nationally recognized program that focuses on the goal of providing the highest quality of health care at the best value.
Dr. Shaker is an active staff member at the Elliot Hospital, Catholic Medical Center, and the Veterans Administration Hospital. He has given presentations on many topics including Laser Assisted Cataract Surgery, Multifocal and Toric implants for the treatment of cataract, the history of cataract surgery, Pseudoexfoliative glaucoma, and emergency management of the “red eye”. Dr. Shaker is a board-certified ophthalmologist, fellow of the American Academy of Ophthalmology and a member of the American Society of Cataract and Refractive Surgery.
